The reel! A lot of little cuts get made to this scene because, quite frankly, a lot of it is fluff. But it's fun fluff, and by looking at the clips side-by-side, you can definitely see the different ways of playing the role.

The Osric in the first clip is definitely exes with hamlet, and it was a messy breakup. The passive-aggressive sparks between them are incredible -- Osric goes into some of the best raptures about responsive carriages.

OSRIC I mean, sir, for his weapon; but in the imputation laid on him by them, in his meed he's unfellowed.
HAMLET What's his weapon?
OSRIC Rapier and dagger.
HAMLET That's two of his weapons: but, well.
OSRIC The king, sir, hath wagered with him six Barbary horses: against the which he has imponed, as I take it, six French rapiers and poniards, with their assigns, as girdle, hangers, and so: three of the carriages, in faith, are very dear to fancy, very responsive to the hilts, most delicate carriages, and of very liberal conceit.
HAMLET What call you the carriages?
HORATIO I knew you must be edified by the margent ere you had done.
OSRIC The carriages, sir, are the hangers.

personally i understand none of that except for the dick jokes:

  • 'carriages' are sheathes, so osric is just over here talking about how responsive the sheathes are to the hilts in rapturous tones and hamlet is snickering
  • and when he makes osric correct his terminology (because even back then, carriage was a needlessly fancy way to say 'the thing you put your blade in to hang it on your waist') it's because 'hangers' can also mean 'balls'
  • osric has just thought a lot about laertes's sword and how it should be sheathed normal stuff

The second Osric gets into more raptures about Laertes specifically. The line reading of 'most excellent differences' is especially good. What I really like about this Osric is how put on his giggling affectations are, and how swiftly he switches them off when he gets serious.

The third is just ... adorably awkward and trying his best. My personal favorite thing is the way he pronounces 'calendar' in 'calendar of gentry.' So needlessly fancy, please never change.

I'm also including a Reynaldo, because I think his performance really stands out when you compare it to the Osrics: no time for hat banter or sword innuendo, he gets right into it, and his flattery of laertes doesn't feel overblown, it feels pointed. Like hey! Remember Laertes? The guy whose life you ruined? You are not ignorant to what excellence Laertes is, are you? ... Love you, Rey, I hope you also never change.

I do need to point out that none of these clips really dwell on the Laertes flattery as much as the text does and, you know ... I guess that's fair ... I guess there are other things in the plot of Hamlet ... but just know these two could really go on about Laertes if they wanted.

earlier in the play, when claudius and laertes were hatching the final poison plot, claudius threw out a line about

'We'll put on those shall praise your excellence / And set a double varnish on the fame / The Frenchman gave you,'

i.e. we'll find some people to talk up how great you are at swords so that hamlet will want to fence you
so you have two possible interpretations of osric here:

usually i assume osric is the #1 laertes fanboy and everyone in the court knows it, but both are actually pretty funny
